Sheffield is a vibrant city located in the southern part of Yorkshire. It is right on the border of the Nottinghamshire forests and the Derbyshire Dales, and is also south of the Pennines. It is populated with over half a million people and is one of the eighth largest cities outside of London.

Sheffield is known as the home of cutlery, after it became the biggest producer of cutlery outside of London in the 1600s. Because of the big production of steel during the Industrial Revolution, the Sheffield population increased by almost tenfold.

Sport in Sheffield

Sheffield is home of two football teams, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. Bramall Lane is Sheffield United’s home ground, and Hillsborough stadium is the home stadium of Sheffield Wednesday, both of whom play in the Coca-Cola Championship division. In 1989, during an FA Cup semi-final match at between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, at Hillsborough stadium, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death.

Sheffield has an ice-skating arena called IceSheffield and is the largest artificial ski resort in Europe. It also has 3 indoor climbing centres. It is home to the famous Crucible Theatre, which is the venue for the World Snooker Championships. Sheffield once held the International Open bowls tournament, and the World Matchplay Championship bowls tournament at the Ponds Forge. The city also has many different sporting teams, Sheffield Sharks basketball, Sheffield Tigers rugby union, Sheffield Eagles rugby league and Sheffield Steelers ice hockey to name a few.

Major Attractions in Sheffield

There are two major theatres in Sheffield, the Crucible Theatre, and the Lyceum Theatre, which make up the biggest theatre complex outside of London. Millennium Galleries is just one of four major art galleries in Sheffield. In the City Centre there is a Sheffield Walk of Fame which is similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame but this one is for famous Sheffielders.
